Saving Pigeons, Together.

Who Are We?

Louie’s Loft is a small, private pigeon rescue and sanctuary founded with love and intention by a longtime wildlife rehabilitator who previously ran Wild Wings Songbird Rehab. After years of caring for thousands of wild birds, the founder made the difficult decision to step away from large-scale public rehabilitation to focus on a quieter, more sustainable mission—one rooted in deep, personal connection with the birds she keeps.

The Loft is named after Louie, a special pigeon who was rescued as a tiny, abandoned baby after a factory demolition. Raised by hand and deeply bonded to her caretaker, Louie became more than just a rescue—she became a symbol of resilience, gentleness, and love. Her presence inspired the creation of a space where other pigeons like her—injured, unwanted, disabled, or domesticated—could live safe, full lives in peace.

At its core, Louie’s Loft is a haven. It's a place where pigeons are not just housed—they are known. Each resident has a name, a story, and a place in the Loft's family. Some are indoor birds with special needs or deep bonds with people. Others live outside in a spacious, enriched aviary where they can fly, nest, and thrive as part of a flock.

Louie’s Loft is a small nonprofit . It’s private, personal, and intentional—created to offer lifelong sanctuary for pigeons who would otherwise fall through the cracks. It is a labor of love and a home built on compassion.

Found A Pigeon?

If you find a pigeon, here’s what to do—whether it’s injured, exhausted, or just hanging around:🕊️ 1. Assess the Situation
  • Is the pigeon in immediate danger? (e.g., in a road, being stalked by predators, unable to fly?) If yes, gently pick it up and move it to a safe, quiet area (a box or carrier is ideal). If no, observe first—it may just be resting.

🩹 2. Check for Signs of Injury or Illness
  • Limping, drooping wings, discharge from eyes or nose, heavy breathing, blood, broken feathers? These are signs the bird needs help. Too tame to fly away or lets you pick it up easily? Likely a lost or domesticated pigeon, not wild.

🧼 3. Contain the Bird Safely
  • Place it in a cardboard box or pet carrier with air holes, a towel on the bottom, and no food or water immediately (especially if it's cold or injured). Keep it indoors, in a quiet, warm, dark place while you seek help.

📛 4. Check for a Leg Band
  • A band may be on one or both legs, with letters and numbers. Don’t remove it—this is the bird’s ID tag.

If the pigeon is banded:
  • It is not wild. Most likely it’s a racing, homing, or pet pigeon. Use a band ID lookup tool or contact: [American Racing Pigeon Union (AU)]: https://www.pigeon.org/ [National Pigeon Association (NPA)]: https://www.npausa.com/ [International Federation (IF)]: https://www.ifpigeon.com/ You can also post a photo and the band info in Facebook groups like: Pigeon and Dove Rescue Network and Lost and Found Pigeons

Do NOT:
  • Release a domestic pigeon back outside—it likely cannot survive. Try to feed baby pigeons without proper knowledge. Assume it’s wild—feral and domestic pigeons are different and need different care.

❤️ Bottom Line:If you find a pigeon—especially one that seems tame, tired, injured, or banded—it probably needs help. Contain it, keep it safe and warm, and CALL US ASAP. Even if you can’t keep the bird, you can be the reason it survives
